Soriano nel Cimino

Soriano lies on the slopes of Monte Cimino and is one of the finest medieval towns in the Tuscia. Stone alleys, small squares and old palazzi give it a genuine feel. Its landmark is the Castello Orsini, built in the thirteenth century for Pope Nicholas III: it stands above the town and commands a wide view over the Monti Cimini.

The flavours of Tuscia

To take home with you.

If you want to take a piece of this land away with you, look for these.

The flavours of Tuscia

Marrone dei Monti Cimini
The chestnut of Soriano, and a very sweet one. From September you find it roasted, as jam or in syrup.
Nocciola Romana DOP
This hazelnut has been grown on these hills for centuries: it is the heart of Tuscia baking.
Porcini mushrooms and truffle
From the woods of the Cimino, and the making of the autumn menus.
Extra virgin olive oil
The olive groves of the Tuscia give an oil of decided flavour, slightly peppery.
Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone
The best-known white wine in the province, with a legend behind it.
Gnocchi col ferro
Water-and-flour pasta rolled by hand on an iron rod: nothing is more Soriano than this.
Minestra di ceci e castagne
Chickpea and chestnut soup, a poor man's dish from Soriano that is worth the journey in winter.
Acquacotta and lombrichelli
A peasant soup and hand-rolled fresh pasta: order them at least once.
Sagra delle Castagne

In October, Soriano goes back to the Middle Ages.

The Sagra delle Castagne, the chestnut festival, runs over the first three weeks of October and it is not dressed up for tourists: the town fills with medieval re-enactments, processions in costume, taverns, music and the long-standing contest between the four contrade, the quarters of the town. If you are coming at that time of year, put it in the diary.
